Ekos was a pleasant world in it’s way – with it’s cold, tall mountains, inter-spaced with lush, crisp valleys as it’s dominate terrain. Other areas exist, and a few have undergone extensive, if primitive, terraforming over the centuries, in an effort to recreate the preferred Ekosian ideal countryside.
In the dim past, there used to be many nations, striving to build and expand over the surface. Wars arose, including a final, nearly terminal world wide conflict – that resulted in nearly planet wide devastation and the near-collapse of intelligent life. However, the “victors” of the war, a totalitarian regime, were able to survive the cycle of planetary recovery with their leaders, ideals and organization, if not all their technology, intact. This left them with a free hand in the long task of rebuilding society on a global scale.
Other nations had survivors, but they were quickly subjugated. Carefully controlled breeding and eugenics programs have produced a wide variety of humanoids, modified to best suit the tasks assigned them by their birth. The restored regime was successful, and the harsh conditions of the post-Armageddon Ekos allowed for no options for the vast majority but obedience to the supreme leaders. By the time things had recovered, it was the only way of life anyone could remember – and reminders of past history that might disagree are routinely erased.
Current day Ekos sees the planet sorely depleted, both in resources, and in atmosphere. A program has been commenced to colonize and exploit neighboring planets – especially Zion – for their resources, and possibly to help restore the Ekosian atmosphere. The urgency of this project has been both alleviated, yet heightened, by off-world contact. The Ekosian ruling caste, mortally certain of it’s own superiority over any other humanoids – on or off Ekos – is willing to trade to help sustain the Reich, but at the same time believes it’s vitally important to clearly further establish their obvious manifest destiny to other worlds in their system. Of course, the Ekosian leaders don’t believe their destiny is now bound by the system…
